"The Year of Yes: A Therapist’s Guide to Embracing Growth and Courage"

Dear Fellow Therapists,
Dear Fellow Therapists,

As therapists, we encourage our clients to step outside their comfort zones, challenge limiting beliefs, and embrace change. But how often do we do the same for ourselves? Inspired by Shonda Rhimes’ The Year of Yes, I’m challenging myself—and my fellow therapists—to make this the year we say yes to the things that scare us.

Rhimes describes how saying yes transformed her life, forcing her to confront fears, break old patterns, and step into a more empowered version of herself. What if we did the same? What if, instead of shrinking back from discomfort, we leaned in?

Saying Yes to Growth

Personal and professional growth often sits on the other side of fear. That training you've been hesitant to take. The speaking engagement you turned down. The business venture you keep putting off. This year, instead of defaulting to no, let’s ask ourselves: What if this could be the opportunity that changes everything?

Saying Yes to Rest

Saying yes doesn’t always mean taking on more. It can also mean saying yes to rest, balance, and boundaries. Therapists are often so focused on others that we forget to give ourselves permission to pause. This year let’s say yes to self-care without guilt.

Saying Yes to Vulnerability

Therapists are trained to hold space for others, but what about when we need it ourselves? Saying yes to vulnerability means allowing ourselves to be seen—whether that’s seeking our own therapy, opening up to trusted colleagues, or admitting when we need help.

A Challenge for the Year Ahead

As we step into the 4th month of this new year, I invite you to choose one thing that scares you and say yes to it. Whether it’s a career move, a personal challenge, or simply making space for joy, let’s embrace the discomfort of growth together.

What’s one thing you’re saying yes to this year? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to hear how you’re stepping into your Year of Yes!

Wishing you all wellness and growth,

Jinia
